The price of PS5 and Xbox Series X does not seem likely for August, as the wait continues

At some point, Sony and Microsoft will have to tell us how much their consoles cost, but that point does not seem to be as much as many, myself included, predict.

It’s now August 20th, and with 11 days left in the month, it looks very unlikely that the PS5 or Xbox Series X will reveal its prices by the end of the month.

First there’s the Series X, and although Microsoft was originally rumored to be holding an event in late August, it seems to hit September at once:

“At the same time, expect news about other Xbox things that have been around recently to come a little later,” insider Shinobi602 wrote on ResetEra. “Stuff that was planned for this month, driven to new month.”

Microsoft is in a unique position because they still have a completely separate console to release, the Xbox Lockhart / Series S, the lower spec version of the Series X. And since the very point of that console is a cheaper to be alternative to the higher powered Series X, the Series S price and X price will have to be disclosed simultaneously for their existence to make any amount of sense. And at this point, that has got to be the next bit of Microsoft’s Xbox news, because there’s literally nothing else to say about the console at this point, and sir knows there will be no other Halo Infinite showcase.

What about Sony? They did a ‘PlayStation Experience’ event a month earlier, saying they had no PS5 news beforehand. It did not. There was rumor that they would have another event at the end of the month, but here we are, the end of reach, and we have not heard a word about a potential second event.

I also expect that Sony will wait for Microsoft and they will announce their prices first. These two have been playing chicken for months now, but I know Sony will definitely match or undergo the Series X, and they will wait to make sure they can do so. They probably won’t be able to underestimate the Series S, but that whole console is an experiment unlike anything we’ve seen before in a console generation. Sony has priced two consoles, a digital only PS5 and and one disk drive, and I would be surprised if there was more than $ 50 gap in between. Sony now has PS5 ads with no price or release date and it is starting to get very strange.

Again, none of this seems like it will be announced this month, and if it announces September prior to a November release, then that’s pretty wild, and a full three months after the normal June announced that we would have seen it at E3. I know everything has been disrupted by the pandemic, and yet I’m not sure why there is this one a lot of confusion and hesitation about prices where a three-month delay is required.

Maybe someone will surprise us at the end of the month, but that probably does not seem to be the case, and September now seems to be the target date for a reveal. Or maybe we’ll just order the consoles at this rate and we’ll get a receipt attached to it when it arrives and tell us how much our cards have been charged, who knows.
