The Pixel 5 ‘Gap’ issue pops up with early buyers

The Google Pixel 5 goes back to the basics when it comes to its design, but it also doesn’t seem to be free of potential problems. As some early buyers have pointed out, the Pixel 5 may have a problem where there is a slight gap between the display and the rest of the phone.

Quite a few early Pixel 5 buyers have discovered that their device strangely has a small visible gap under the display. The inside of this phone doesn’t seem to show up, but it’s too big to collect dust and, sensibly, buyers worry that it could compromise IP68 water and dust resistance.

These initial reports are also appearing on Google’s Support Forum and XDA forums. In most cases, the distance is visible around the corner that the front face camera has, but not at that point. These reports also seem to suggest that from the moment they pull the phone out of its box, which is a bit of a relief. If this gap is being used after using the phone, it will be a very serious cause for concern.

On our friends Android Police The same issue was seen on their Pixel 5 review unit, although it is not as pronounced as others in that case or in the same place. On our own Pixel 5, purchased in retail in the UK, there is a very small gap at the corners.

Given that the Pixel 5 hit the market just last week and is not yet on sale everywhere, it’s hard to decide how widespread this is. From its appearance, this issue is more likely to occur in the “Just Black” model, but our unit is Sorta Sage so your results may change.

Google has not yet commented on the status.
