LONDON – British pharmaceutical giant AstraZeneca said on Monday that interim analysis of clinical trials has shown that the average effectiveness of its coronavirus vaccine in protecting against the virus is 70%.

Following the late-stage trial readouts of Pfizer-Bioentech and Moderna, it comes after a string of encouraging vaccine results in recent weeks.

It is hoped that the covid vaccine can help end the coronavirus epidemic, which has claimed the lives of more than 1.3 million people.

Pascal Soriot, CEO of AstraZeneca, said development was a “significant milestone” in the fight against the global health crisis.

“The effectiveness and safety of this vaccine confirms that it will be very effective against COVID-19 and this will have an immediate impact on public health emergencies,” Soriot said.

“Furthermore, the simple supply chain of vaccines and our profitable commitment and commitment to comprehensive, equitable and timely access means that it will be affordable and available globally, supplying millions of doses on approval.”
