Facebook’s “classic” experience, the interface with the iconic blue navigation bar at the top, disappears in September for good. Engadget reports that a Facebook support page has been updated and said that everyone will have the new design soon. Although you can temporarily switch back to the old interface on the Facebook page, the button warns that “the classic Facebook will no longer be available from September.”
The new design was announced last year at Facebook’s developer conference, and will initially roll out on the service’s iOS and Android apps. In March, it received a widespread desktop release as an opt-in feature, leaving people free to continue with the old design as they wished. Come September, however, the old design for the good will disappear.
The new interface is a major change from what Facebook has used for most of its existence. It’s a lot cleaner, covers a lot more white space, and there’s also a dark mode for people who are into that sort of thing. Functionally, it also places a greater focus on the features of Groups of Services, as well as prominently displaying references to Facebook’s Watch, Marketplace, and Gaming sections in its top navigation bar.
It’s a much needed update compared to the messy appearance of yore, but it’s hard to see it bringing back all the Facebook users who have left the service in recent years.
