The Office episode with Blackface has been edited for Netflix

An episode of season 9 of The Office, “Dwight Christmas,” is being edited to stream to remove a scene in which a black-faced character appears. According to Variety, the scene will be pulled from the episode while the series airs on Netflix, and will remain out when The Office switches streaming homes, to NBCUniversal’s Peacock platform, in 2021.

The show’s creator, Greg Daniels, issued the following statement:

“The Office is about a group of people who try to work together with mutual respect despite the inappropriate actions of their boss and assistant manager,” Daniels said. “The program used satire to expose unacceptable behavior and deliver a message of inclusion. Today we cut out a photo of a black-faced actor that was used to criticize a specific racist European practice. Blackface is unacceptable and making the point so graphically is hurtful and wrong. I regret the pain it caused. “
