More new coronavirus cases are being reported in Europe than ever before.
Big picture: One reason is testing. Death and hospitalization Spring in is much lower than the level you see, although it constantly ticks upwards.
- Officials from Spain and France are scrambling to respond to their particularly worrying outbursts. Madrid is now under quarantine, while Paris has been closed for two weeks.
- Germany did well but is now facing a spike. “Parties and family gatherings, including weddings, birthdays and funerals, were the main sources of the new infection,” the German Public Health Agency said, according to the WSJ.
Flipside: There is growing hope that Latin America has now gone through a long, brutal climb.
- Severely affected countries, including Brazil, Mexico and Peru, have seen significant reductions in new cases and deaths.
- It is not clear whether the encouraging trend will continue. The WSJ warns that “Latin Americans have filled hair salons, bars and gyms to comfort from the recent downturn.”
- “With only 8% of the world’s population, Latin America now accounts for one-third of the global deaths of Covid-19.”
India’s case count also tends to be downward. However, it is too early to say whether the bad is over.
