All eyes may be on the upcoming iPhone 12, but we’ve also heard rumors recently that an updated iPad Mini might be just around the corner. A concept artist has shared his vision for the iPad Mini 6, and it could be the device we’ve been waiting for.
Taking the design cues from the current iPad Pro, the concept features a similar 7.9-inch display to the current iPad Mini 5, but with an edge-to-edge display. With reduced bezels around the screen, the device becomes even smaller (or smaller). If the real thing really looks like this, it could well become the first iPad Mini to rank on our list of the best drawing tablets.
Damn, I wish they would make an iPad mini like this pic.twitter.com/y4qYdslDCfJuly 24, 2020
In addition to the iPad Pro design language, the Parker Ortolani concept shares its support for Apple Pencil 2. With improved digital drawing capabilities paired with a 20% smaller footprint, an iPad Mini like this could be the best portable tablet for graphic designers on the move.
Where this concept differs from the real rumors about the new iPad Mini is the size of the screen. According to MacRumors, Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has revealed that Apple is currently working on an 8.5-inch iPad, while Ortalani opts to stick with the same 7.9-inch size (hence the smaller body). For digital artists, a larger screen with a similar form factor might be a more preferable alternative – a few extra pixels can go a long way.
for all the people who ask … this is what the iPad mini would look like if they kept the same footprint and extended the screen … Personally, I’m not a fan of the aspect ratio … but I know a lot of people want a Larger screen pic.twitter.com/wmhzbHFgWD25 July 2020
With that in mind, Ortolani also scoffed at an 8.5-inch version (above) that retains exactly the same body size as the iPad Mini 5. As his concept shows, this would require stretching the screen to a new narrow aspect ratio that it looks a bit off. If Apple is really working on an 8.5-inch model, it will be interesting to see how it tries to alter the form factor of the tablet to accommodate the larger screen.
Twitter users love the concept of Ortolani. “I’d be there the first day,” says one, while another adds, “Not even one question. I’d buy three!” There’s clearly an appetite for an updated iPad Mini, though some have pointed out that if Apple is working on a foldable iPhone with a big screen, the days of the iPad Mini could be counted. It remains to be seen whether that will come true or not, in the meantime, if you’re looking for a great deal on an iPad, check out the Apple Back to School sale.
