A man in Chicago is facing murder charges for allegedly assaulting a Vagrans employee during a deadly Labor Day weekend in the city, officials said Tuesday.

Police said 18-year-old Williams tried to rob a pharmacy in the Wicker Park neighborhood early Sunday when he grabbed Olga Marie Calderon, 32, mother of two, by the throat while she was storing shelves.

He then stabbed her several times as she tried to push him.

“In this case, whatever kept him away – whether it was a slight pushback or whatever it was – he immediately carried out a robbery that quickly turned into a brutal murder,” said police CMDR Eric Winstrom.

Investigators allegedly found Williams with a knife and clothing in a nearby yard, the commander added.

Williams was said to have carried out two previous robberies last Wednesday, one at the same Walgreens store and the other at Walgreen in a different neighborhood.

The suspect was charged with first-degree murder and his trial is set for Wednesday. It is unknown at this time what he will do after leaving the post.

If there was a previous interaction between the suspect and Calderon, it was not immediately known, authorities said.
