Sony has released the first firmware update for its recently launched PlayStation 5. The patch notes are short and vague, but take note of the slightly improved performance after you download it.
Patch notes for system update 20.02-02.25.00 do not specify which areas of the console are being targeted, simply stating, “This system software update improves system performance.” The full update is just 900 MB shy and is now available for download.
The PS5 was launched in the US, Canada and other regions on November 12, with the launch in Europe this Thursday, November 19. Since launching the console, there have been a lot of necessary news ranging from bugs blocking PS5 game downloads. A format of numerous examples of technical problems with the comfort mode of the console. Many gamespot employees have also personally faced these problems.
The PS5 could benefit from a change that removes PS4 versions of games from default downloads, taking up unnecessary space on the console’s already tiny SSD.
There are also a few small tweaks that we want to implement in the future, depending on our time with the console. For example, when you run a PS4 version versus a PS4 version of a game, the console can obscure it. If you haven’t seen much visual upgrade in your games, this could be a sign that you’re running the wrong version.
If you haven’t upgraded to the next pay generation yet and you’re still playing on the PS4, that console also got a firmware update, too. It’s a basic stability update, so don’t expect major changes to your system.
That’s not to say the console isn’t impressive anywhere else. In our PS5 review, reviewer Matt Paget liked a lot about Sony’s latest console, from the dual mess of Dual Sense to the incredibly fast loading time. Paget writes that “Sony has laid a strong foundation for its new pay generation gaming.” But now the developers have to use all the tools set out to build on it.
