The Kansas City Chiefs reach an agreement with veteran guard Kelechi Osemele

Given the sudden loss of a Super Bowl starting second baseman last season, the Kansas City Chiefs moved to fill the gap by agreeing to the terms of a one-year contract with veteran Kelechi Osemele, a source said.

The move was first reported on Saturday by Yahoo Sports.

Osemele, 31, is an eight-year NFL veteran with three teams, most recently the New York Jets. He’s a two-time Pro Bowler, with the Raiders in 2016 and 2017, and was named All-Pro All-Pro First Team in 2016.

The Chiefs recently learned that right guard Laurent Duvernay-Tardif would choose not to participate in the 2020 season amid the coronavirus pandemic. Stefen Wisniewski, who started as a left guard at Super Bowl LIV, left as a free agent for the Pittsburgh Steelers.

The Chiefs have other candidates to start on the guard, including veteran free agent Mike Remmers. Andrew Wylie and Martinas Rankin each started at least five games for the Chiefs on guard last season and also returned.

Osemele played in three games for the Jets last season before injuring his shoulder. Osemele said he had a torn labrum. The Jets fined Osemele after he refused to practice and underwent surgery that was not authorized by the team. Then he was released.
