Apple’s iPhone 12 Series sports an upgraded hotspot mode that supports 5GHz Wi-Fi connectivity, greatly extending the usability of handsets across 5G cellular networks worldwide.
As noted by multiple reports on Twitter, including Zlotch Aaron Jollo, The iPhone 12 device includes a new personal hotspot capability that works as an upgrade from previous iPhone models. Prior to the iPhone 12, Apple’s Pal smartphone was able to connect to both the 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands, but limited hotspot duties in the 2.4GHz band.
Capability is not spelled out in Apple’s marketing content, or feature is not explained in iOS. Jollo has confirmed that a new “Mimize Compatibility” option manages to switch between the two bands.
According to the feature description, “Internet performance may be reduced for devices connected to your hotspot when turned on.”
Although the disclaimer is unclear, Zolo says the settings move the individual hotspot to the 2.4GHz band to enable compatibility with a wider array of devices. Switching to the option for faster data transmission will probably enable the iPhone 12 handsets to be locked in 5GHz Wi-Fi mode.
This benefit should prove beneficial for users in areas where 5G cellular connectivity is being introduced. Currently, most 5G locations are limited to sub-6GHz bands with speeds comparable to existing 4G LTE networks. Some urban destinations, however, are getting a quick MMwave band of flavors and will be able to take advantage of the iPhone 12’s fast hotspot.
Apple’s iPhone 12 supports the iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Mini, iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max MMwave, but only supports the US To enable enable access to the protocol in, home iPhones integrate a special MMwave antenna window that resides in the cutout below the side button.
