A new Quinnipiac University A poll finds Trump behind Biden by 13 points in Florida after a previous April poll that found Biden ahead by just 4 points.
Biden leads by 20 points or more on the two big problems of the day: the coronavirus response and the treatment of racial inequality. The president only has a 3-point lead over Biden in the economy, which is his biggest talking point.
To St. Pete Polls The poll released Thursday found the race was closer, but Biden’s lead is still outside the margin of error. Biden is 50-44 in that poll. The Democrat has a 14-point lead among the independents who drove Trump’s 2016 victory.
The new polls are alarming to Republicans for several reasons.
Florida, the largest swinging state in the country, is the quintessential battleground state. The result is generally only determined by a point or two in the general election, so polls showing Biden with a great advantage underscore Trump’s weakness at the moment.
Trump narrowly won Florida in 2016, and there’s almost no way back to the White House for him if he loses there in 2020.
The president has seen his support in the Florida crater despite the fact that his campaign has spent a lot there. The Trump campaign has invested a staggering $ 40 million in Florida, and outside Republican groups have spent another $ 16.1 million.
Trump’s response to the coronavirus is clearly weighing him down in a state that has become a hotspot for the spread of the disease.
The Quinnipiac poll found that 70 percent of Florida voters described the spread of the coronavirus as “out of control.”
37 percent of voters approve of Trump’s handling of the virus, compared to 59 percent who disapprove of it. That’s close to Trump’s overall job approval rating, which stands at 40 percent positive and 58 percent negative.
Republicans plan to hold a reduced convention in Jacksonville, Florida, next month. 62% of voters overall said it would be unsafe to hold the convention there, although 69% of Republicans believe it will be safe.

John Walsh, campaign manager for Markey shot back in a statement shortly after the press conference, saying Kennedy voted in favor of the Omnibus funding bill for the 2014 fiscal year, which included language to maintain a level of 34,000 detention beds through September 2014.
Kennedy’s Latin American outreach director Ramon Soto responded to Markey’s campaign, saying they had “misinterpreted” Kennedy’s vote, which took place in an effort to prevent a government shutdown.
“The Markey Campaign has deliberately misrepresented Kennedy’s vote to end the threat of a federal shutdown in order to try to salvage a story that reflects a devastating lack of empathy for ICE detainees by Senator Markey,” Soto said. “Kennedy voted to completely remove the mandate from the bed and, when that amendment failed, he voted against the larger bill. Ed Markey opposed President Obama and Democratic Leadership to support ICE and intentionally vote on the bed quota. ”
Kennedy and Markey will meet in primary on September 1.
