Geoff Keighley hosted a live practice with the DualSense PS5 controller on July 17 as part of his Summer Games Fest event; however we didn’t Really learn anything from the stream.
Keighley’s broadcast got the Game Awards presenter to talk a bit about DualSense features (already confirmed), such as haptic feedback and adaptive triggers, before taking the features for a brief test in a demo of the Astro’s Playroom title. exclusive to PS5.
While the manual did give us a look at the features in action to some degree, it didn’t actually provide any new information about the DualSense PS5 controller that we really wanted to know, such as details about the charge, price, or future color variations.
A big disappointment
The only bit of information we managed to get from the stream was that the DualSense’s audio seems to have more range than the DualShock 4, which apparently sounds great when paired with Tempest 3D Audio, and that the controller weighs a bit more than the DualShock 4. , with Keighley saying the DualSense has “more weight” but ultimately feels stronger.
From the demo, it appears that Astro’s Playground is essentially made to showcase DualSense’s capabilities, and to some extent it did. We saw a toad suit that was used to show adaptive triggers: Geoff described the tension of wading through the arena and we even saw the host fly towards the controller to move a fan in-game, but overall, the practice was extremely disappointing.
It’s hard to know exactly what adaptive triggers and haptic feedback feel like when you only have someone narration How do you feel? But that could be forgiven if the broadcast had been really informative instead of feeling like a marketing gimmick.
Also, the interview with Eric Lempel, head of global marketing for PlayStation, felt more like two friends chatting than a real interview. Lempel gave almost no new information.
It looks like we’ll be waiting until the rumored State of Play in August before getting more juicy PS5 details.
