The trailer shows us a short piece of Selina taking over Batman, suggesting that the characters in the film will be with each other. But could this be the beginning of a love-hate relationship like what we’ve seen in the past this duo take over? This should be interesting.
We also get to see the absolutely incredible transformation of Colin Farrell in the scar Oswald Cobblepot, who, according to Reeves, is still making his way up the crime ladder in this film. He is not yet the mighty criminal, known as the Penguin, but it seems certain that he is nevertheless causing a great deal of destruction for the Bat.
Here’s why I called it that Joker connection earlier. The band with face-painting guys challenging Batman in the trailer certainly look inspired by the Clown Prince of Crime. My first reaction was that The Batman was engaged to the Jokerz, the Joker-worshiping gang introduced in the Batman Beyond animated series, but what if these guys were actually inspired by the actions of Arthur Fleck in the movie ’70s set?
We know that by the end of Joker, Arthur has a cult that followed around him, despite the fact that by that point he had allowed himself to be murdered by many people. His followers, who donate their own clown makeup and masks, see Arthur as a freedom fighter, one who fights for justice in a corrupt city, where the rich have it all and the poor have nothing. It would not be surprising to see that Arthur has become a symbol all these years later, inspiring the next generation to take to the streets and cause their own chaos.
I know WB said both The Batman en Joker exist in their own universes, but I would not be surprised if the studio was suddenly afraid to bind these two films together after the massive success of the latter. If Pattinson ever takes over the Joker, you can bet your Batarangs that WB will do his utmost to make it the Joaquin Phoenix version of the villain.
