You don’t need to buy Pixel 5 or 4A 5G to get some of Google’s latest software tricks. Google is rolling out a December feature drop that includes many of the Pixel 5 features that come with the Pixel 3 and new phones (including the Pixel 4), as well as additional treats for Mendelssohn fans.
You will get the Extreme Battery Saver mode promised to cut extra battery life at the expense of limited applications and other power chewing elements. The updated Google Photos Editor uses AI to suggest edits you can make with a single tap. Convenient sound improves the output of your phone speaker based on ambient sound and Google Duo now supports screen sharing for group calls. Assistant-operated Hold for Me, meanwhile, can save you the hassle of listening to music during support classes.

Other upcoming features are exclusive to the Pixel 5 and 4A 5G. Finding GPS location will be more accurate than foot. Your phone can also detect when a site or application uses a non-native language, and Google Lens provides translation. If you miss the next top-up, and adaptive charging (the same as what you find on iOS) controls the charging speed based on your alarms, your phone’s battery health is enhanced, so adaptive batteries should save more power. Adaptive connectivity can add battery life by coming down to LTE when you don’t need 5G raw speeds.
And yes, Mendelssohn fans will be happy with Google’s latest pixel feature drop. Everyone using Pixel 3 and later can customize the backdrop with new wallpapers from the Star and Favorite series, including at least one star to each of their favorite Force-Winging kids.
More icons, grid views and app shapes are available, and you can set wallpapers based on popular art found in Google Arts & Culture. If you listen to music frequently, now Play Song Recognition can export your history to the YouTube Music Playlist.
The Pixel 5’s features are coming in series 3 and 4 weeks after Google’s initial launch. While there are still incentives to buy a new phone, Google Feature Drop makes it clear that your old Pixel software is due to software.
