As the Yankees rush to seek more information on Domingo German’s plans after he posted on social media about the possibility of retiring from the sport, a great player told German not to quit.
Jumbo Diaz, a former Reds and Rays reliever, posted on German’s Instagram page, encouraging him to keep playing.
“You must come back my brother,” Diaz wrote in a lengthy comment about a photo of a German in a Yankees uniform.
Translated from Spanish, it reads: “You must return, my brother.” Díaz also tells German to stay positive and to overcome adversity.
Early in the evening, German was cryptic in a post of his Instagram story.
“I left baseball,” wrote German. “Thanks my people”.
Translated from Spanish, it says: “I have left baseball. Thank you all.”
German is serving the remainder of his 81-game suspension under the league’s domestic violence policy. He served 18 games last season and was ready to serve 63 games in 2020, so he is not eligible to pitch until Game 4 of the American League Division Series. It was highly unlikely that the Yankees would have let the Germans pitch in the playoffs, considering they would not pitch in the regular season.
German did not appeal his suspension, which came after the league’s investigation into allegations of domestic violence against the Dominican-born pitcher.
Yankees manager Aaron Boone had no updates on the status of Domingo German on Friday night.
“I know he is in the United States visiting his son right now,” Boone said after an Intrasquad game at Yankee Stadium. “Beyond that, I really don’t know much. I just heard something like that, but I really don’t have much to say about the situation. “
Catcher Gary Sanchez, a close friend of German, said he had not spoken to the pitcher in a while and had not heard of German’s Instagram post hinting at his retirement from baseball until after he left the in-school game.
