In one of China’s highest-profile corruption cases, Lai was convicted of accepting or soliciting a total of 1.79 billion yuan (8278 million) in bribes between 2008 and 2008, while also being a senior banking regulator. He was sentenced on January 5 by the Tianjin Secondary Intermediate People’s Court.
He was also convicted of corruption and post-marital charges.
Lai met with his close relatives before being sentenced to death by a Tianjin court following an order from China’s Supreme People’s Court.
