An F-16 fighter jet crashed Tuesday night in the highlands of Michigan, according to officials.
The Wisconsin Air National Guard said the F-16 Fighting Falcon, assigned to its 115th Fighter Wing, crashed around 8 p.m. at Truxfield Air National Guard Base in Madison, Wisconsin.
The Wisconsin National Guard wrote on Facebook, “The plane was on a routine training mission in the morning with a pilot at the time of the incident.”

“Emergency responders are on the scene. The cause of the accident as well as the pilot’s condition is unknown at this time, and an investigation into the incident is ongoing,” the social media post added.
According to Amlive.com, the tragedy occurred north of the Garden Peninsula near the border of Delta and Schoolcraft County in the Hiawatha National Forest. The U.S. Forest Service assisted local authorities in setting up the perimeter and launching the search late Tuesday night.
On Sunday, the 115th Fighter Wing said it was planning evening training flights from Dec. 7 to Dec. 10, according to its Facebook page.

Residents of the area could see or hear F-16 fighter jets “take off or land at about 10:00 a.m.,” they said.
There was no word on the pilot’s condition until 4 p.m. Emergency responders were at the crash site until midnight, reports said.

Trux Field Air National Guard Base is located about 75 miles west of Milwaukee.
