The Dark Knight Stands: Christopher Nolan does not allow chairs in his movie sets

Director Christopher Nolan is responsible for some of the biggest and critically acclaimed box office hits of recent years. Actress Anne Hathaway, who worked with Nolan on The Dark Knight Rises and Interstellar, believes she may have cracked the code for Nolan’s success: He doesn’t allow chairs in his movie sets. Hathaway revealed this unusual method of work during a one-on-one interview with her Les Miserables co-star Hugh Jackman, headed by Variety (via playlist). According to actress Catwoman, Nolan’s philosophy can be summed up this way: “If you have chairs, people will sit, and if they are sitting, they are not working.”

Hathaway continued, “I mean, he has these amazing movies in terms of scope and ambition and technical prowess and excitement. He always comes to the end on schedule and on budget. I think he’s on to something related to the chair.”

Nolan fans will recall that Jackman also starred in a Nolan movie (The Prestige from 2006), but does not reveal whether that “no chair” rule was in effect at the time.

(It should be noted that the movie sets are very busy, and often full and crowded with places with the most notable seats generally reserved for the video village where a bank of monitors allows playback. The stars, of course, they have trailers that they can return to during downtime on set)

Nolan’s next big screen epic is Tenet, an ambitious spy movie starring John David Washington and future Batman Robert Pattinson. We’re still not entirely sure what the movie is about, and even Washington admitted that the cast was confused about Tenet’s plot.Unfortunately, it’s also hard to say when exactly Tenet will hit theaters. Like many film and television projects, Tenet’s release date has already been pushed back several times due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Nolan reportedly was very adamant about releasing the film in July, but Warner Bros. has now delayed the release until August 12. Consequently, AMC Theaters has delayed its planned reopening until July 30.
