Most smartphone users spend a lot of time staring at their home screen, and many enjoyed it when iOS 14 provided a way to shake things up by changing the design of their iPhone app icons. But while this was a bit confusing using the shortcuts app, Apple’s new iOS 14.3 update made the process much easier.
First, after tapping the custom application icon, you have to wait for your iPhone to open the shortcuts, which will then open the desired application. But now, tapping the custom icon will open it directly. It may not be the most dramatic iPhone update in years, but hey – anything that makes it a little better than one of our best camera phones is a welcome addition.
Home screen icon customization has gotten even better with iOS 14.3! I’ll get a quick banner message on launching the shortcuts app before launching the desired application! Apple thanks! #OS #OS14 homescreen pic.twitter.com/ddNPHmBz5UDecember 14, 2020
The solution isn’t quite perfect – a small banner will briefly appear at the top of the screen to show that a shortcut is running. But the whole process is naturally much faster and easier, as there is no need to open a separate application first.
Since the iOS icon became design free for all in September, users have flooded Twitter with their own super-cool original homescreen design sharing. Indeed, when it comes to customizing your iPhone, only your imagination (and design skills) seem to have limitations.

Pretty creative, right? If you want to fill your iPhone with personality, take the following steps:
- Download and open the Shortcuts app, tap on the top-right + icon and click ‘Add Action’
- When using ‘Open Application’, open the application you want to work on
- Edit the name and icon, add a new name, plus file to change the design
- To prevent doubles, remove the app icon from your home screen
