Netflix dropped the season-four trailer from The crown today. The drama – which is set to premiere on November 15 – will feature Emma Corrin as Lady Diana Spencer, and will follow the royal family from the late 1970s to the early 1990s. It’s unclear what events the season will cover (though, some leaked set photos may provide hints); what we do know is that back in 2016 the show’s creator, Peter Morgan, told Folk that seasons four and five “heavy” will be focused on Diana.
In short, it will be exciting. Don’t get me wrong, I’m a big fan of period dramas and a fan of this show. That said, there are times it’s dragging, which says it’s given something to the recent cast of both Olivia Colman and Helena Bonham Carter. But the new trailer – which is indeed Diana-heavy – promises more excitement than previous seasons. Set on ominous violin music, scary photos of Gillian Anderson as Margaret Thatcher and her wig are interspersed with scenes of Diana: her profile in the shadows, deep breathing in a dirty mirror, against swarms of fans and paparazzi who look almost apocalyptic.
The final shot of the trailer is from Diana’s wedding, which brings me to the exciting fact that Princess Diana was able to dress up. Really dress, which means that if this season will be reliable for anything, then it will be for fashion – hopefully the fuzzy hat trend was over by now.
