In every draft, each team has regrets (or two or three).
Some are larger than others. Some are harder to explain than others.
Take the 2017 draft. Everyone knew that the Cowboys would take the pass rusher in 2016 after being led by Benson Mayova with six sacks. It was just a matter of time.
When it was his turn, at 28 o’clock overall, the Cowboys had a choice of Taco Charlton of Michigan or TJ Watt of Wisconsin.
It sounds like no brainer now, but the Cowboys chose Charlton and the Steelers chose Vatt after two elections.
Stephen Jones, Cowboy’s executive vice president, acknowledged the grief on Friday.
“Sure,” Jones said on 105.3 Fan. “You always do that, if you’re truthful and you’re honest – whatever you may have.”
Watt has career ks1 sacks, including .5..5 this season and earned the -l-Pro honor last year. Charlton only spent two seasons in Dallas, spent time in Miami and now plays in Kansas City. He has 11 career sacks, including two for chief ministers this season.
Jones confirmed when it was reported in Dallas: then defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli wanted Charlton.
Mike Nola replaced Marinelli as the defensive coordinator this season, with Marinelli now as the Raiders’ defensive line coach in Las Vegas. The Cowboys have turned Tampa Two into more than one multiple scheme.
Vote will fit perfectly. (Of course, Vatt will fit any team into any scheme.)
“It’s the hard part [Watt] There was a serious argument [at No. 28], ”Jones said. “I think the biggest issue was that we were playing a-3 with Rod there, and Rod was worried about how he would survive the run in 4–3. [He] There was not the same concern with support. Naturally, if you had to do all this again, I wish we could have done that, and, of course, with coach Nolan and our defense it could fit better into what we’re trying to do now. So, you know, he’s obviously a great player. He is already embarking on a great career, not unlike his brother, and congratulations to the Steelers for meeting him. “
