(Bloomberg) – 15,442 cases of the new coronavirus have been reported in California since the start of the state’s evening curfew on Saturday night.
There were 13,005 cases of infection reported on Friday, bringing the total to about 1.1 million. State figures show the death toll has risen from 86 to 18,643. The increased patient load is closer to the low, leaving only 1,921 intensive case unit beds available from the hospital in California in July.
Infections of millions of people, or areas affecting 94 %% of the population, will be curfew from 10pm to 5am in most counties to reduce the rate of infection.
Only 10 countries globally have more cases than California, where the number of cases has now risen in Mexico and Germany, which are hot spots for epidemics.
Governor Gavin News said earlier in the week that the curfew would prevent irregular work and gatherings to “flatten the turn again”, reflecting the growing alarm among state officials as the third wave of coronavirus infections gathering the state.
The increase in California cases comes at a time when the infection has exceeded 12 million in the U.S., and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommended against all travel on cruise ships, citing a high risk of infection.
Officials have also requested passengers to avoid and withdraw Thanksgiving gatherings – or even cancel them. Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti tweeted on Saturday to celebrate virtually or just celebrating with members of the same household.
The impact of California’s order on businesses will be limited and it appears to be aimed at preventing late-night socialization. The restaurant will need to close outdoor dining by 10pm, but may continue to offer withdrawals later. People who shift overnight to factories, warehouses or logistics jobs will not be affected. A 24-hour grocery store will be able to stay that way.
