Carole Scarsella, a Buffalo woman who died on July 19, was known as a loving grandmother and incredible woman. But it was the way her sports fan was raised in her obituary that caught the attention of many this week.

As the obituary says, the late Lackawanna, New York resident, “loved the New York Yankees and LeBron James. HATED Tom Brady.” It was one of five facts about Scarsella listed alongside her love of reading, smoking cigarettes, slot machines, and Facebook games, and being an incredibly involved mother.

A screenshot of the obituary was tweeted on Monday. Scarsella’s granddaughter found him on Tuesday and shared how good it was to see other people remember a woman he loved so much.

What is particularly remarkable about this type of sports-related information in an obituary is that hate is just a statement of fact rather than an active dig. Take, for example, the Cleveland man who asked six Browns to be his pale bearers so they could “let him down one last time,” or the Seattle man who listed the Seahawks’ “bad game call” that ended with Malcolm Butler’s interception in Super Bowl XLIX as his cause of death.

Stylistically, this is closer to the obituary of a New Jersey woman who noted she was “a lifelong Yankees fan, with the exception of Alex Rodriguez.”

That said, according to her granddaughter, it is important to remember the other good things in Scarsella’s life.
