The Blasio says NYC gyms are not reopening at any moment

New Yorkers who caught pandemic pounds during the coronavirus lockon will have to wait a while before starting again to hit the gym.

Even though Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced Monday that fitness centers across the state could reopen next week, COVID-19-related restrictions, City Hall said people living in the Big Apple should not soon plan to pump iron .

This is because when it comes to security inspections, exercises take a backseat to education and day care.

“There is no higher priority than ensuring our schools and children’s centers are safe for learning in the fall, and the city’s dedicated team of inspectors will continue to prioritize that work,” said Mitch Schwartz, a spokesman for Mayor Bill de Blasio, in an email.

Schwartz refused to set a timetable for when gyms would be back in business, but noted that the city had already opted to allow indoor fitness classes and reopen indoor pools “at this time.”

“We will be developing an honest and strict inspection system for other setups for gyms in the coming weeks,” he said.
