For the first time since training camp opened for the Chicago Bears, they were actually on the field at Halas Hall and did some true honesty to football stuff. Since the veterans reported a week ago, it was only strength and conditioning and curiosity for them, but not today.
Today was the first time the quarterbacks threw the ball to their receivers, so the question on everyone is clear, “Which quarterback leads the competition?”
“If we start in competitive periods and the defense is on the other side, I will be able to answer that question better for you,” head coach Matt Nagy said after practice. “These guys are playing football here and there, they get their timing down, they understand what they have to do with ball handling. We see that, but again, the evaluation process that we all try to look at and search for and search for will really not start until you put some people on the other side. “
The Bears can’t do offensive vs. defensive team drill like 7 on 7 until Friday, but even then we won’t know if it’s Mitchell Trubisky or Nick Foles who leads the way at quarterback.
Nagy said that after a day he “thought the quarterbacks’ timing looked pretty good”, and that their footwork was on point, and that they understood where things could get pre-snap.
It will be a job that is underway before the Bears go around appointing a starter for their first game, which is currently scheduled for Sept. 13 against the Lions, but Nagy assured the media today that as soon as they know who wins the job, he will pass on that info.
