The baby cappuccino monkey screamed from the treetops before dying. Immediately, a few relatives of the infant gathered to eat the inanimate corpse – and the scientists saw the whole thing.
Researchers have observed this particular population of white-faced cappuccinos Monkeys (Sebus imitator) Documenting his life in Costa Rica’s Santa Rosa National Park, for more than 37 years. In all these years, scientists have never reported a case of cannibalism among monkeys; But that changed on April 9, 2019.
The team described a tremendous event in a new report, published in the journal on October 16th. Ecology and Evolution.

While observing a small group of monkeys, the scientists made a loud noise from a nearby tree. The 10-day-old monkey, known as CT-19, fell to the ground, and his mother, known as CT, fell down to collect the infant. CT twice tried to carry the baby back to the tray ops by sticking CT-19 to his stomach, but the infant fell both times and now he could not hang on to the mother. CT-19 remained motionless for several minutes, and soon, other monkeys gathered around to investigate the corpse.
Warning: The following is a graphic description of what happened next.
A 2-year-old male arrived at the scene and kicked the dead monkey’s leg, sticking out his toe. The authors wrote, “CT made no attempt to retrieve the corpse, she remained awake and awake,” the authors wrote. An alpha female, 23 years old, then drew away the young male body and gnawed at the corpse of the possessor, starting from the left foot; Half an hour later, the female consumed the entire lower part of the baby, leaving only the head, chest and arms.
The juvenile male managed to steal with a little tail during the festival, but otherwise, the alpha female gobbled up most of the CT-19. Technically, the male was the second cousin of CT-19, and Alpha was the granddaughter of the female infant, the authors wrote.
Before this young goal’s death, only eight cases of carnivorous monkeys were experienced in Central and South American monkeys, the authors noted. In primates, in general, rare cases of narcissism tend to coexist with infanticide committed by unrelated adults. In other cases, closely related individuals may consume the infant after its natural death.

In this case, there is reason to believe that CT-19 was a victim of infanticide, the authors wrote.
“Immediately after the front scream and the infant’s fall to the ground, the adult male PW was coming from the same area as the adult female,” the authors wrote. Previous observations Capuchins suggest that females often chase infanticide and, although they do not testify to how or why CT-19 fell, they suspect that the adult male PW pushed or otherwise attacked the child.
White-faced cappuccino monkeys usually eat both plants and small animals, such as lizards, squirrels and birds. When they catch an animal prey, the monkeys start biting the face, so that the animal is quickly silenced and has to avoid biting itself; Capuchins usually consume the whole animal individually or as a group. When one of them is navigated, however, the monkeys behave quite differently; Only two monkeys participated in the meal and they left the upper half of the carcass.
The authors write that most of the other monkeys nearby only observed the corpse, or made threatening gestures towards it, the authors wrote, “This is an unusual situation for cappuccinos.”
The few monkeys suggested by the authors that turned to cannibalism may have done so for nutritional benefits. About two weeks after breakfast at CT-19, the alpha female gave birth to her own young, meaning she was in the final stages of pregnancy during the event. The teenage male was recently breastfed from his mother, which means he only started fending for himself hanging from CT-19 treetops.
These scenarios indicate that cappuccinos can turn to cannibalism when supplemental nutrients are needed, but primate cannibalism is very rare, this is just a hypothesis. The authors conclude that more cases of primate cannibalism will need to be evaluated to determine exactly why monkeys are involved in this behavior.
