Elon Musk says Tesla will eventually push for 2-factor verification to secure customer accounts to what he describes as “shameful late.”
The increasing connection in cars has made them more subject to hacking in recent years and today there are no more connected cars on the road than Tesla’s.
The CEO said that along with safety and security of cars cybersecurity is a priority for the automaker.
After a few people managed to exploit security vulnerabilities in Tesla cars, Musk said that preventing a ‘fleet-wide hack’ is Tesla’s top security priority.
Most of the cyber security operators on Tesla cars have been linked to connecting the car to unprotected Wifi networks, but owners have also asked for better ways to protect their Tesla accounts.
Musk has talked about Tesla implementing 2-factor authentication to secure accounts.
It should have been released last year.
The CEO now says that the feature is in “final validation” and should therefore be moved to Tesla accounts soon:

Recently, Tesla owners increasingly asked for the feature after Tesla started offering expensive feature upgrades of thousands of dollars through its mobile app.
Some Tesla owners inadvertently purchased expensive software upgrades and some asked Tesla to implement a 2-factor verification requirement before processing the purchase.
There are also more and more features being released through Tesla accounts.
