Tennessee’s tax-free weekend at restaurants underway

GOODLETTSVILLE, TN – If you’ll finalize your plans for the weekend, you’ll have a chance to save some money while supporting your favorite restaurant.

All food and beverages at restaurants are tax-free during the second holiday weekend of state sales in 2020. This comes one week after shoppers are piled on the back to school items such as clothes, school supplies and computers.

The Tennessee General Assembly approved a second tax-free weekend in an effort to boost sales and support for the restaurant industry. Restaurant owners said the timing is perfect.

“I think it’s a positive thing for us,” said Jim Hagy, co-owner of Chef’s Market in Goodlettsville. “Last week, people saved on school supplies and clothing, and this week they have to spend a little more so they can maybe spit and eat.”

Like many restaurants in Central Tennessee, Hagy says Chef’s Market is suffering financially because of the COVID-19 pandemic. In an effort to keep customers and employees safe, the dining room is now set up to create social distance, cleaning is a top priority, and masks are required. The restaurant has also started offering sidewalks.

“There’s probably one in every 100 people who come without a mask,” Hagy said. “Everyone is so gracious, and we are grateful for their support.”

The tax-free weekend began at 12:01 a.m. on August 7 and ends on Sunday, August 9 at 11:59 a.m. It includes the sale of food and beverages at restaurants and restaurants with limited services.
