PHOENIX – The Arizona Department of Licensing and Liquor Control issued a subpoena to a Tempe bar on Thursday.

Varsity Tavern received a violation notice and an opportunity to comply from the department.

According to a press release, the bar is under investigation for knowingly allowing employees and managers who tested positive for COVID-19 to continue to work and failed to take appropriate steps to notify the Arizona Department of Health Services, employees and customers that they contacted the workers.

The bar was also cited for not enforcing social alienation and wearing masks.

Varsity Tavern voluntarily closed Wednesday.

The department is seeking to revoke the bar’s liquor license as a result of the violations.

The department also suspended liquor licenses at Life Time Fitness this week for failing to close Rooftop Bistro and Life Café & Lounge in compliance with state orders.

On Monday, Governor Ducey issued an executive order ordering the operation of bars, gyms, movie theaters, water parks, and pipelines through July 27 to mitigate the spread of COVID-19.

Arizona health officials reported 3,333 new coronavirus cases and 37 deaths Thursday morning, bringing the state’s documented totals to 87,425 COVID-19 cases and 1,757 deaths.
