Teachers hold sit-ins to protest NJ School’s plan to reopen 5 days a week

Dozens of teachers at Summit held a session Wednesday morning to protest the public school district’s re-plan, which calls for up to 5 days a week of instruction for individuals for students who choose to return to classrooms.

A video shows teachers on the lawn in front of the Summit Middle School, wearing masks, staying 6 feet apart and holding signs.

“I can teach from a distance, but not from a box,” read one sign.

Another sign states, “What will you say when your children’s friends and teachers die?”

“Viruses do not discriminate. Children are not immune. Schools are not safe, ‘reads a third sign.

The video was posted on the City of Summit Facebook page.

Telephone messages left with the Summit School District and the Summit Education Association were not immediately returned Wednesday.

Classes at Summit are scheduled to begin Sept. 1.

Gov. Phil Murphy said last week that school districts will have the option to begin the 2020-21 school year with full-time distance learning, subject to state permission, and at least 139 districts as of Tuesday had informed the state that they are considering it.
