In a move that could herald further changes to the Texas 2020 high school soccer schedule, TAPPS, the largest private school league in Texas, announced Friday that its soccer season would be delayed five weeks and would be cut short.
The league soccer season was slated to begin on August 3 with strength and conditioning exercises, with the first games scheduled for August 27. But at a meeting held practically Friday morning, TAPPS chief executive Bryan Bunselmeyer said the schedule would be delayed by more than a month.
Now, strength and conditioning exercises can start on September 8, followed by two weeks of practice on full pads and a scrimmage period that will start on September 21, until the first week of games on September 28. The league will not back down from its state championship games for now, opting for a truncated season, but Bunselmeyer said the situation remains fluid.
The move comes amid the escalation of the COVID-19 pandemic across the state of Texas, and growing discussion about school openings.
The UIL, the governing body of public schools in the state of Texas, has not announced any schedule changes so far, but there is growing speculation that an announcement, perhaps similar to that of TAPPS, is imminent.
TAPPS is the largest private school league in the state, with more than 135 teams playing high school soccer in Texas.
