Taking a look at the Cincinnati Reds player list of 60 players

The deadline for teams to submit their player lists of 60 players to Major League Baseball was today at 4pm ET. And now we have the list of players from the Cincinnati Reds group. There will be 35 players preparing in Great American Ballpark, and another 22 players preparing in Prasco Park, the teams’ alternate site for the taxi squad. If you did the math in your head, you realized that there are only 57 players on the roster. That means there are still three places open for the team to fill if they wish. They don’t have to if they don’t want to.

What does the breakdown mean?

Well, it seems pretty clear that the guys heading to Great American Ballpark are the guys who play for all 30 spots on the opening day list. Outside of Aristides Aquino, no one on the Prasco Park roster seemed to stand a chance of turning the major league club into spring training unless injuries opened the door.

That said, things can certainly change. Injuries could occur, as would (and probably will) positive COVID-19 tests that can lead to staining for the Prasco Park team.

Who is missing?

The Reds began spring training with 61 players at camp. Only four of those guys are not here. Derek Dietrich is the biggest name missing, but catcher Chris Okey and infielder Blake Trahan aren’t here either. They are much less surprising omissions. The fourth player is right-handed pitching prospect Vladimir Gutierrez, who less than 30 minutes before the roster was released, was suspended for 80 games for a positive PED test for stanozolol.

On the prospective side of things, more than a few players who could have been there are missing. Some teams are using some of their roster points for pure development points in order to gain minor league players time on the field that they otherwise would not obtain. Right now, that doesn’t seem to be the case for the Reds with any of these players, all of whom would have reasonably been in Double-A or Triple-A this year anyway, and on the verge of a call if they were acting and opened a place. It is still possible that all three positions on the open list could be filled with these types of players, but it is very surprising that there are still none.

Update at 4:45 pm ET

Reds.com’s Mark Sheldon was the first to report that Derek Dietrich is still in the organization, but is not listed.

C. Athletic Rosecrans of The Athletic also reports that infielder Blake Trahan was invited by the Reds to his camp, but decided to withdraw.
