Later, he posted that he would not be attending Biden’s inauguration on January 20.
On Wednesday, many Trump supporters gathered near the United States Capitol and then some people stormed the Capitol. In the chaos, a Capitol police officer and four protesters were killed, including a woman who died after being shot.
After the riots, the joint meeting of Congress continued and finally decided to certify the Democratic candidate Biden as president-elect. But President Trump has said for several months that the November 3 US election was rife with irregularities, fraud and unconstitutionality.
In a video Thursday night, President Trump stated that his current focus is “ensuring a smooth, orderly and smooth transition of power. This is a moment that must be healed and overcome.”
Trump also added: “2020 is full of challenges for people. A dire epidemic has changed our lives. Millions of people have been quarantined, our economy has been destroyed, and countless lives have been claimed.”
The president also noted that to overcome the CCP virus (coronavirus) and other challenges, “everyone’s joint effort is necessary.”
“(We need) to re-emphasize the values of patriotism, faith, charity, community and family. We must reinvigorate divine love and loyalty, which will unite us into a family of all people,” he said.
Trump also condemned the violence on Capitol Hill, which led to the blocking of the House of Representatives and the Senate, and postponed Electoral College certification.
Some media outlets, lawmakers and critics said Trump should be held accountable for Wednesday’s violence. In a speech to his supporters that day, Trump reiterated allegations of rape and fraud in the general election. However, he did not ask his followers to attack the Capitol, and then told his followers to “go home in peace.”
Some Trump supporters interviewed by The Epoch Times stated that Trump did not tell anyone about the riots.
Tony Good, a retired from the Marine Corps, came from Florida to attend the rally. He heard President Trump’s speech Wednesday morning. He said Trump did not incite violence in his speech.
“No, absolutely not. Inciting riots and defending convictions are different,” Goode told The Epoch Times reporter. “He didn’t tell anyone to riot, he just told people that protest is our right. Rights granted by the United States.”
Another Florida resident, Elizabeth Rowell, said Trump did not incite anyone to use violence. “I never felt insecure. I met a lot of great patriots along the way.” She said, “The whole time we were there, we shouted ‘USA’ and sang the national anthem.”
