Coming to the second day of the annual summit, Qualcomm announced more details of the new Snapdragon 888 mobile phone processor. This SoC for the Android flagship in 2021 is based on Samsung’s 5nm process. In terms of CPU configuration, the new Kryo 680 architecture follows the ARM reference design, using a 2.84GHz Cortex-X1, three 2.42GHz A78s plus four 1.8GHz A55 cores. In terms of frequency, it is basically the same as the S865, but according to the official release, the overall CPU performance and power saving efficiency of the S888 have increased by 25% compared to the previous generation.

As for the GPU, it was presented yesterday that it will be replaced by a new Adreno 660. Compared to the Adreno 650 used in the S865, its performance has increased by up to 35%. With the 3rd generation Elite Gaming platform and its new Game Quick Touch optimized touch response and variable resolution rendering features, users are expected to get a better gaming experience. At the same time, Qualcomm has also invested more resources in computational photography. The new ISP Spectra 580 has a processing speed of one billion pixels, and the S888 itself supports a combination of three ISPs, allowing the device to process 2.7 billion pixels per second, allowing simultaneous shooting with three cameras ( 28 MP photos taken simultaneously at three focal lengths) OR 4K HDR recording at the same time). In addition, S888 also supports 10-bit color depth HEIF format and has 4K 10-bit HDR, 8K recording capabilities.

In this generation of Snapdragon flagship chip, Qualcomm has enabled its sixth generation artificial intelligence engine. The computing power of the new Hexagon 780 AI processor has reached 26 TOPS, and the power consumption performance has also been improved, which can provide long-term support for more interactive and intelligent functions. In terms of connectivity, as mentioned yesterday, the S888 integrates a new Snapdragon X60 5G modem. It is suitable for SA and NSA dual mode, supports global millimeter wave and sub-6GHz main frequency bands, 5G carrier aggregation and DSS dynamic spectrum sharing. Its download and upload speeds can reach 7.5Gbps and 3Gbps respectively, and Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.2 support is naturally available as well.

According to Qualcomm, mobile phones equipped with Snapdragon 888 will be officially launched early next year. Many manufacturers, led by Xiaomi, have made it clear that their new phones will become the first batch of S888 models. We are expected to hear many related announcements in the coming months.
