Before Emperor Guangxu came of age, the court was controlled by Empress Dowager Cixi, who did not return to power until 1887, when Emperor Guangxu had just turned sixteen. But returning to the Guangxu Emperor does not mean that she is truly willing to give up the power in her hands.
On the 27th day of the first month of 1889, the emperor married and Cixi had to temporarily move from the palace to care for the elderly in the Summer Palace due to ancestral rituals. But at the same time, she put many eyeliners among the officials of the imperial court, asking Emperor Guangxu to come to her every day to ask for peace, in order to achieve the purpose of capturing the movements of the emperor. For more than two years since then, Emperor Guangxu has been controlled by Empress Dowager Cixi, which left him very dissatisfied. During this period, they had been trying to do something beneficial to the country, but none of them could match Cixi’s strength. Until the outbreak of the Jiawu Peasant War in 1894, Emperor Guangxu, under repeated provocations from Japan, decided to fight against Japan and repeatedly ordered increased military payments.
However, Empress Dowager Cixi advocated for peace, which was completely contrary to the political views of Emperor Guangxu. Furthermore, Emperor Guangxu had requested to stop the construction of the Summer Palace and return the salary of the navy, which made her feel very upset; powerless. Pressured by the powers-that-be, Cixi could only temporarily compromise Emperor Guangxu’s decree to reform the law.
In 1898, Emperor Guangxu dismissed all 6 people, including the Shangshu Huaitabu of the Ministry of Rites, and appointed Tan Si and others as the Zhangjing military machine, and appointed the fourth rank to participate in the New Deal. The outbreak of this incident completely enraged Empress Dowager Cixi, and she even secretly tried to abolish Emperor Guangxu; and the arrest and murder of Empress Dowager Cixi initiated by Kang Youwei and others was known to Rong Lu and reported to Empress Dowager Cixi, which made Empress Dowager Cixi hasten the process of disappearance of the emperor.

In 1898, Cixi officially regained power and imprisoned Emperor Guangxu in the palace. In the following years, Emperor Guangxu was subject to Cixi and quickly lost his fighting spirit. Emperor Guangxu was seriously ill in 1908, and Cixi’s physical condition was not optimistic at the time. Originally, there was nothing wrong between the two people, just to see who died first, but this was all broken after Li Lianying reported the Guangxu Emperor’s behavior to Cixi.
It is said that the Guangxu Emperor often expected Cixi to pass away early in her illness, and wrote in his diary: “I only hope that Lafayette dies before me, so that I can also do some good deeds that will benefit the country before me. I am dying. And I kill Yuan Shikai and Li Lianying. ”It so happened that these comments were known to Li Lianying and reported by Empress Dowager Cixi, so there was a previous death of Emperor Guangxu.
Regarding the death of the Guangxu Emperor, there have been divergent opinions among the people, but there has been no definitive evidence. Until 2008, relevant personnel passed the identification of a lock of hair left by Emperor Guangxu, and it was confirmed that it was arsenic poisoning, and finally confirmed that Emperor Guangxu died at the hands of Cixi.
