As we all know, many of the best-selling historical novels and masterpieces are engaging, largely because they understand what readers like to see and are able to do what they love. In Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Zhuge Liang was written as a god, just because everyone loves to see these plots; like the Battle of Chibi, an important battle that determined the three divisions of Wei, Shu and Wu, there was an important link before the war: “Zhuge Liang’s straw boat borrows arrows”; in fact, “the straw boat borrows arrows.” The person is not Zhuge Liang, but someone else.

The Battle of Chibi refers to the battle in which the combined forces of Sun Quan and Liu Bei defeated Cao Cao’s army in the Chibi area of the Yangtze River in Jian’an 13 (208) at the end of the Eastern Han dynasty. As described in “The Romance of the Three Kingdoms”, before the war, Zhuge Liang went alone to start a wonderful sophistry with the officials of the Dongwu group and finally convinced the two alliances. But in the process of persuading the two alliances, Zhuge Liang’s talents made Zhou Yu feel threatened. So Zhou Yu prepared a special game, saying that because the two armies lacked bows and arrows, if Zhuge Liang could make 100,000 arrows in ten days, then we would have a great chance of winning. The resourceful Zhuge Liang knew at a glance that this was a harmful tactic, but calmly said that “it only takes three days.” Later, with the help of a misty day, Zhuge Liang again used Cao Cao’s suspicious character and adjusted some straw boats to attract the enemy. Eventually he borrowed more than 100,000 arrows.

This plot writes Zhuge Liang’s ingenuity as a god-man, but “Three Kingdoms” is not written like that; according to Pei Song’s note in “Three Kingdoms”, in the first month of the eighteenth year of Jian’an (213 AD), Cao Cao and Sun Quan faced the two armies. In the first battle, Cao Jun was defeated, so he couldn’t hold out. One day, Sun Quan took advantage of the fog in the water to break into Cao Jun’s camp from Ruxukou by boat to observe Cao Jun’s deployment. Cao Cao was suspicious by nature, seeing Sun Jun’s powerful purge, he feared fraud and did not dare to fight. So he ordered all bows and crossbows to fire at the Wu ship. Cao Cao led the archer to release arrows, and the arrows fell like rain. After a while, Sun Quan’s ship was full of arrows, the hull tipped, and it was about to capsize. Sun Quan spun the warship and received the arrow from the other side, the arrows were level and the drums returned. Only then did Cao Cao realize that he was deluded.

The real straw boat that borrowed arrows came five years after the Battle of Chibi. Cao Cao admired the courage and courage of Sun Quan’s straw boat that borrowed arrows, and couldn’t help but sigh: “Having a child is like Sun Zhongmou.” The story of “Arrow” carried over from Sun Quan to Zhuge Liang, highlighting Zhuge Liang’s unparalleled wit and intelligence. It was also because readers liked to worship gods and people. Zhuge Liang only met the needs of the readers; Therefore, since the creation of The Romance of the Three Kingdoms, most of the people only know that there is “Romance of the Three Kingdoms” but not “The Romance of the Three Kingdoms”; therefore, Zhuge Liang did not make the straw boat by borrowing the arrow, but Sun Quan’s masterpiece; Zhuge Liang played the most important role in the Chibi battle, he was the “lobbyist” and successfully persuaded him. The Shu-Wu alliance joined forces to resist the movement to the south of Cao Cao.
