The United States Senate has overwhelmingly confirmed that senior diplomat Antony Blinken will serve as Secretary of State. His top priority after taking office will be to repair America’s leadership in the world, repair cooperation with allies, and reverse the “America First” of the Trump era. Foreign Policy, judging from his speech at the Senate appointment hearing, the United States will continue its engagement with Taiwan and support the tough Trump-era stance on China.
The United States Senate voted 78 in favor and 22 against on Tuesday (26) and approved Blincol, the secretary of state nominated by President Biden, to succeed Michael Pompeo as State Department. The 58-year veteran diplomat is a longtime Biden confidante, was a senior official during the Obama administration and is well versed in geopolitics.
Biden’s policy in China has attracted a lot of attention after he took office. At the previous nomination hearing, many Republicans worried that Brinken would revert to the Obama-era diplomatic line. In this regard, Brinken said he supports the Trump administration’s tough stance on China, although it is not entirely right, and he does not agree with the “America first” strategy; Faced with technological and economic competition from China, the United States should think about how to improve its competitiveness.
Brinken also stated at the hearing that the Biden administration will continue its commitment to Taiwan to ensure that Taiwan is able to defend itself and hopes that Taiwan will play a greater role in the international arena. “Taiwan is a model of democracy and a strong economy in many ways. And in high-tech cities, there are also many things we can learn from to respond to the epidemic.”
Regarding Pompeo’s abolition of the “Guidelines for Trade with Taiwan” restrictions prior to his resignation, Brinken did not directly reply whether he would continue and said he would study it carefully.
The Biden administration has promised to return Iran to the nuclear deal and lift sanctions on Iran. In 2018, the Trump administration withdrew from the Iran nuclear deal and imposed a series of sanctions on the Tehran authorities to prevent Iran from reaping the economic benefits promised by the deal. Iran responded by reducing implementation of its nuclear deal commitments.
The cases of cabinet personnel nominated by Biden have passed successively through the Senate, including Treasury Secretary Ye Lun. Yellen also stated at the hearing that he would address China’s unfair and illegal business practices, and that he would “use every tool” to deal with China’s behavior, echoing Blincol’s speech on China’s policy, and continuing with Former Treasury Secretary May Nuchin (Steven Mnuchin) takes a hard line with China.
Brinken is expected to take office after being sworn in on Wednesday and will work closely with White House National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan in the future.
