In order to oppose independence and promote reunification, the CCP has been soft and tough on Taiwan, provoking a backlash from the Chinese. The “Taiwan Think Tank” published today (24) a poll to “promote the normalization of the country” to revise the constitution. The survey results indicated that if you can only choose between Taiwanese and Chinese, up to 86.0% of respondents think they are Taiwan. Of the people, only 6.3% said they were Chinese. In this regard, Dong Siqi, the deputy executive director of the “Taiwan Think Tank,” bluntly said that as the proportion of people identifying with China has dramatically decreased, identification with Taiwan has become a national consensus.

The “Taiwan Think Tank” released a poll today to announce public perceptions and opinions on the issue of constitutional amendment. Deputy Executive Director of “Taiwan Think Tank” Dong Siqi reported on the survey results. At the same time, he invited Professor Hu Boyan of the Soochow University Law Department and Chen Lifu, Acting President of the Taiwan Teachers Association. Professor and legislator Cai Yiyu, and legislator Chen Tingfei attended the meeting to comment.

Dong Siqi said that the constitution is the fundamental law of a country and should reflect the reality and status quo of the country. At present, the international community is furious due to Wuhan pneumonia, and all countries are unable to carry out their usual daily lives. Currently, only Taiwan can maintain a normal life. However, compared to the normal operation of Taiwan, China’s constitutional government system presents an abnormal and unrealistic appearance, which has seriously affected the national development and national identity of Taiwan. The Legislative Yuan recently established a constitutional amendment committee, opening the window for constitutional reform. To understand the current trend in public opinion on issues related to the constitutional amendment, Taiwanese think tanks conducted surveys.

As for the identity of the Chinese people, the survey results show a fairly obvious tendency to think that they are Taiwanese. Up to 62.6% think they are Taiwanese, but only 2.0% think they are Chinese. In addition, 32.6% thought it was both, 2.1% said they did not know or had no opinion and 0.7% refused to answer. However, the interesting thing is that if you can only choose between Taiwanese and Chinese, 86.0% think they are Taiwanese, only 6.3% say they are Chinese, 1.1% say they are both and 4 , 9% do not know. Or without comment, 1.7% refused to respond.

In this regard, Dong Siqi analyzed that in the democratization process, Taiwan has gone through rotations of three parties and has held multiple democratic elections at the same time, which has gradually stabilized Taiwan’s national identity. Furthermore, China’s recent and ongoing cultural attacks on Taiwan have made the proportion of people agree with China. Significant decline and recognition of Taiwan has become the consensus of all the people.

In summary, Dong Siqi said that the results of this survey reflect that there are two important consensuses in Taiwanese society, namely the “Taiwan Consensus” and the “New Generation Consensus”. On the one hand, thinking with Taiwan as the main body has become the consensus of all the people; on the other hand, compared to other age groups, the generations under 30 also have a very high collective consensus.

Therefore, Dong Siqi pointed out that in this constitutional amendment process, in addition to the collective power of the Taiwan consensus, it is also necessary to carefully handle the issue of differences of opinion between generations. The changes in the legal system and the political system involved in any constitutional amendment issue are very extensive and more public discussions are needed. Legislators are expected to be able to open public hearings on related issues as soon as possible and, at the same time, present constitutional amendment proposals that have public support.

This poll was conducted by the “Taiwan Think Tank” polling place from September 15-17 and targeted people 18 and older in 22 counties and cities across the country, using a stratified ratio to randomly sample residential telephone surveys, an effective sample of 1074 people. . With a 95% confidence level, the sampling error is within plus or minus 3.0 percentage points. Based on the most recent population data from the Ministry of the Interior, a multiple repetitive weighting processing is adopted for the household register, sex, age and education level. The source of funding for the research was a group of Taiwanese experts.
