President Tsai Ing-wen held a video conversation with Ambassador Kelly Craft, Permanent Representative of the United States to the United Nations, at the Presidential Palace this (14) morning. In addition to thanking the United States and the Kraft Ambassadors for their strong support for Taiwan, he also expressed his gratitude to the Ambassador. I cannot come to Taiwan to express my regret and hope to meet in Taiwan in the future. It is worth noting that Tsai Ing-wen and Kraft each displayed the American flag, illustrating the friendly relations between Taiwan and the United States.

In her speech, Tsai Ing-wen said that she is very happy thanks to modern technology. We can still meet online today, although Ambassador Kraft will not be able to make the trip this time, and we look forward to visiting Taiwan in the future. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank the ambassador for his steadfast support for Taiwan’s international engagement, for striving to deepen relations between Taiwan and the United States, and speaking on behalf of Taiwan at the most important time.
Tsai Ing-wen noted that Ambassador Kraft’s actions have inspired the people of Taiwan. In fact, everyone is very fond of the ambassador, whether it is speaking for Taiwan, participating in the “Global Cooperation and Training Framework” (GCTF) workshop, or meeting with Lee Guangzhang in New York. The meeting between the ambassadors and the support of Ambassador Kraft brought the relationship between the two countries closer together and the world understood Taiwan better.
Tsai Ing-wen mentioned that the photos taken by Ambassador Kraft with the Taiwanese black bear puppets on Twitter have also captured the hearts of Taiwanese people. This teddy bear not only symbolizes Taiwan, but also inspires younger generations to want to know more and work together to help Taiwan become a member of the United Nations.

Tsai Ing-wen stressed that we will continue to let the world know that Taiwan is a good force and an important partner. We have the ability and determination to contribute to the international community. Looking to the future, we will continue to promote membership of the United Nations and its affiliated conferences and events. We hope that the United States will continue to support him. Ambassador Kraft’s suggestions on how we can move forward in this regard are valuable.
Tsai Ing-wen said it is unfortunate that Ambassador Kraft was unable to come to Taiwan this time. I look forward to the opportunity that we can meet the owners friendship in the near future. I think the ambassador will love the beautiful scenery, the food and the friendly people of Taiwan. He also thanked the ambassador once again for all that she has done for Taiwan and looked forward to meeting in Taiwan soon.
Tsai Ing-wen and Kraft also held an in-depth dialogue on Taiwan’s international engagement, deepening Taiwan-US cooperation, sharing democratic ideas, and sharing educational resources.
Daivd Feith, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Regional Security Policy and Multilateral Affairs in the Asia-Pacific Office of the US Department of State, attended the meeting online. The Secretary General of the National Security Council, Gu Lixiong, the Minister of Foreign Affairs Wu Zhaoxie, and the director of the Taipei Office of the American Institute in Taiwan, Brent Christensen (Brent Christensen)) and others also participated in this video conference.
