Reporter Zhang Yazhu / Taichung Report【2:00 p.m. Press release |22:21 Update and complement the data of the author Wang Jingyi】
Speaking of the scenic and record places of Taichung, I think many people would recommend the very popular “Miyahara Ophthalmology” ice cream parlor because the exterior of the building is filled with nostalgic red brick walls and the interior decoration is a retro ceiling filled with artistic atmosphere. The style of the library is quite distinctive, which is why each holiday attracts many people to line up. As its name is “Miyahara Ophthalmology”, it is generally known that Bingdian’s predecessor was an ophthalmic hospital, but in fact, it has been moved from the ophthalmology hospital to the health center, STD hospital and Asian school in about 80 years. When it was finally abandoned, it wasn’t until the “Sunrise DAWNCAKE” team bought it in 2010 that this historic building got “new life”.

In 2010, the well-known pineapple and cheesecake pastry shop “Hinode DAWNCAKE” bought the “Miyahara Ophthalmology”, which was abandoned for more than 10 years and kept its original name during the Japanese occupation period. It was rebuilt on site but retained part of its appearance and The Gallery, etc., opened in 2012 after its completion and is famous for selling ice cream, chocolate and food. Today’s “Miyahara Ophthalmology” sells desserts and ice products. It is the most original and, like its name, it is a large-scale ophthalmic hospital. It was opened by Miyahara Takeshi, who was appointed to the Taichung State Council in 1927 during the Japanese occupation. Yes, it was the largest private hospital in Taichung at that time.
However, after the end of World War II in 1945, the Wufeng Lin family and social elites had asked the pro-Taiwanese Takeo Miyahara not to be deported, but in the end the National Government refused. Miyahara Takeo, 73, left Taiwan and returned. In Japan, the Takeo Miyahara Eye Hospital also confiscated government assets and shifted to the Health Unit of the Taichung City Government Department of Civil Affairs, and then to the Taichung City Health Center. With the increase in turnover, it was used as a health center and the space became less and less. However, the Taichung city government at the time had no funds to build a new health center, so it exchanged terms with Zhang Ruizhen, a prominent family at the time. The construction cost was borne exclusively by Zhang Ruizhen. Upon completion, the site of the Taichung City Health Center, Miyahara Ophthalmology, was transferred directly to Zhang Ruizhen.

In 1958, the Taichung Health Center was completed at the new location. In 1959, the health center moved to the new building. Miyahara’s ophthalmology was found to be unofficial property. However, there were still many problems in the property rights management process, causing commotion on several occasions. According to the late photographer and reporter Yu Ruji, Professor Wang Jingyi from the Department of Cultural and Creative Industries at Hongguang University of Science and Technology, and the Taichung City Government Office of Cultural Affairs jointly published the book “Modeling and deity transformation: Yu Ruji witnessing a Taichung One Jiazi “on page 207 ~ p. 213 records, on September 19, 1961, the first STD hospital in Taichung opened in the Miyahara Department of Ophthalmology, mainly providing STD exams and treatments, in addition to the Yasheng intensive school, North Dumpling House, Zhongdali Electric El restaurant, Quantai Taxi, Toyo Taxi, Tour Vehicle Rental Company, and Northern Beef and Mutton Restaurant are open to the public, which is quite lively. However, the property right to the building was actually owned by Zhang Ruizhen, but due to occupation by some people, Zhang was unable to use it. As a last resort, he had to take legal action.

It is reported that there were 40 tenants in the premises of the Miyahara Ophthalmology Department Building (former Taichung City Health Center). After losing the lawsuit against Zhang Ruizhen, in early 1964, the Taichung City Center mobilized the gendarmerie police, the security department and the gendarmerie to enforce the law. , Which required households to relocate, mobilized around 400 talents to complete this task. In 1970, the entire verdict was determined to win. Taichung’s first STD hospital was also moved and later used as Taiwan’s daily business office. However, Zhang Ruizhen was not happy or started using it because as time passed, the building has been devastated for a long time and there are still residents who do not want to move. Zhang has to idle him and let time determine his fate and future. Years of wind and sun, along with earthquake 921 in 1999 and Typhoon Kameiji in 2008, seriously damaged the Miyahara ophthalmology building. Part of the roof collapsed and the lobby of the building collapsed. The landscape of the past disappeared and became a disaster. Ruins and dangerous buildings covered with grass.

But in 2010, Miyahara Ophthalmology met a “noble person”. The team at “Sunrise DAWNCAKE”, a pastry industry famous for selling pineapple cakes, decided to buy the old Miyahara Ophthalmology site and invested a lot of money to completely rebuild it. What was moving is that in order to preserve the historicity of the building, they hired experts to help, eventually saving the red brick walls, ancient arch and red brick wooden roof arcade of Miyahara Ophthalmology, which are still visible today. . The Japanese-built Miyahara ophthalmology department will have a hundred-year history in a few years. Meanwhile, it has undergone many changes and was once turned into a ruinous ruin. It is really fatal. Fortunately, thanks to the efforts of the Sunrise Group, the current Miyahara Eye Clinic not only preserves traces of history, but also developed its characteristics in Taichung, becoming one of the must-see attractions in Taichung.
Mr. Yu Li, son of the late photographer Yu Ruji, spoke about Miyahara Ophthalmology during the interview and sincerely said that a building with a historical and historical history like Miyahara Ophthalmology can be purchased and developed by the Hinode Group. This is the best ending. “After all, not all historic buildings can be preserved in this way.

After the death of his parents, he came to Taichung, Taiwan from Zhangzhou, Fujian. By chance, he came into contact with the camera and began to explore photography. Then he recorded the evolution of Taiwan and Taichung through camera and video camera lens for a long time. It won the Golden Horse award and the Asian Film Festival. Wait for the prize. He and the Taichung City Government jointly published a book “Shaping Shenhuajing”, which records the local stories of Taichung, including the customs and culture of Taichung, a scene and a thing, and the geography of mountains and rivers. It is quite valuable. There are millions of photographs in his life.
✎Professor Wang Jingyi, Author of “Shaping Deity: Yu Ruji Testifies to Taichung Yijiazi”:
The book was commissioned by the Taichung City Government Office of Cultural Affairs to assist with the implementation of Hongguang University of Science and Technology in 2014. The first photos are from Yu Ruji’s photographs. Professor Wang Jingyi personally interviewed Yu before his death to learn about local stories and historical allusions. Not only that, in order to better determine the personnel, time and characteristics behind the photos, Professor Wang also spent a lot of time collecting relevant historical materials, flipping through old newspapers, and digesting and classifying detailed photographic explanations and historical records. As for the art editor for this book, it was produced by Professor Tu Hui from Hongguang University of Science and Technology. Photographs, materials and arrangements, etc., resulted in the birth of the story “Xing Shen Hua Jing” that is not found in history textbooks.
