After more than 7 years of hard work, the last mile of the electrified road network of the Circular Island Railway has been completed, the Taitung Zhiben to Pingtung Fangliao section of the south bound railway. After intensive testing in November, the condition is stable and the punctuality rate is quite satisfactory for the Railway Administration.

The Transportation Committee of the Legislative Yuan today inspected the Nanhui railway electrification project, which Lin Jialong, the Bureau of Railways and the Taiwan Bureau of Railways joined them to attend and give a briefing.

The Railroad Administration stated in a briefing that after the electrification of the South Loop railway, the Kaohsiung-Taitung railway will be shortened by 27 minutes and the Kaohsiung-Hualien route will be shortened by 39 minutes. At the same time, the total capacity of the South Loop will increase by 7% during the week and 13% on holidays. The number of diesel trains on the southern loop line has been reduced from 36 to 18, and the number of diesel trains for the Kaohsiung Underground Chemical has been reduced from 25 to 14.

Legislator Liu Zhaohao said that after the electrification of the Southern Limit Railway, the Highway Bureau will cooperate with the establishment of a complete feeder transport, which will help improve tourism and recreation services in the east. Once electrification is opened to traffic, the public can enjoy comfortable, fast, beautiful, safe and energy-saving rail transportation services.

Liu Zhaohao mentioned that the new trains purchased by Taiwan Railways from Japan were originally planned to be delivered by the end of the year. However, due to the impact of the epidemic and some delays in Japan, they are expected to be delivered in the middle of next year. By then, both the comfort of the trip and the volume of transport will increase.
