According to the latest report by the international information security company “BlackFog”, as of November of this year, there have been 228 cases of governments and global companies that have been attacked and extorted by hackers. Among them, Taiwan has more than 10 registered accountants in the past three months. The company was hacked. The latest victims were the laptop manufacturer “Compal Computer” (2324) and the industrial computer manufacturer “Advantech” (2395). The top two manufacturers were bailed out for a total of NT $ 1 billion!
The global death toll from the new corona epidemic is about to exceed 1.5 million, and more and more companies are starting to work at home. However, the home security environment is not as good as the business environment. Some people not only use authentic operating systems, but also use “virtual private networks” (VPN, virtual private network) to reconnect to the company network, providing an opportunity for hackers.
According to our research, since mid-October this year, more than 10 publicly traded companies in Taiwan have been attacked by hackers using ransomware, and the number has increased from 2 to 3 per week; the price of shares of the victim company has fallen between 70 and 350 yuan. Excluding construction, biotechnology, transfer production and auto parts, some of the victim companies have paid a ransom ranging from NT $ 2 million to NT $ 5 million in exchange for decryption keys for the pirated materials. The latest victims are laptop maker Compal Computer (Compal) and industrial computer market leader Advantech (Advantech).
Compal specializes in OEM notebooks for brands such as DELL, HP, Lenovo, Apple and Google, and is the second largest notebook OEM in the world. Taking advantage of the long-distance business opportunities created by the epidemic, Compal posted an after-tax profit of 1.1 yuan per share in the first three quarters. This year’s notebook shipments are expected to exceed 43.9 million units last year.
Just as the revenue was good, on November 8, it was reported that Compal had been invaded by a ransomware program! “After internal employees turn on the computer, a blue screen appears that shows ‘Your network was hacked’ and warns against turning off the computer and deleting any files.” According to a person familiar with the matter, Compal IT (Information The science and technology department issued an urgent notice for this: “The server was attacked by a ransomware virus. Employees should not reconnect to the company intranet, or connect to the Internet even if they are using company computers. “
The person said: “The group of hackers that attacked Compal is exactly the ‘DoppelPaymer’ that has proliferated in recent months (the DoppelPaymer ransomware used by the organizationCall it), the other party asked to pay 1,000 bitcoins in 72 hours. If you don’t pay quickly, the ransom will rise to 1,100 bitcoins (approximately NT $ 600 million). “
