The president of the United States, Donald Trump, is one of the favorites of the social networks Twitter. The frequency of tweets is higher than that of heads of state and dignitaries. The New York Times even calls it “Twitter rules the country.” However, his tweets are often posted on Twitter with caveats. On the 4th and 5th of this month, he was warned 7 times that they were false or misleading. An earlier article in the British newspaper The Independent noted that once Trump leave office, Twitter is likely to ban you from using your account.
The Independent reported that several leaders of the Democratic Party have publicly asked Twitter to temporarily freeze Trump’s account before the end of state billing. However, under the protection of the company’s “public interest guidelines” (public interest guidelines), Twitter is currently unable to suspend or delete Trump’s account.
According to Twitter rules, the frequency of user violations is too high, generally resulting in temporary or permanent account suspension. However, public figures are protected by a “public interest exception” policy.
Twitter’s “public interest exception” policy is: “Sometimes it is in the public interest to allow people to view tweets that would be deleted under normal circumstances. If the content of these tweets directly helps to understand or discuss topics of public interest These contents will be considered of public interest by us ”.
The Independent quoted a Twitter spokesperson as saying that the reason Trump’s tweets were not removed and his account was not suspended was to protect public discourse.
Trump’s Twitter account meets all three public interest conditions: this is a verified account; the account has more than 100,000 followers; the account belongs to a current public opinion / official / representative or candidate.
The Independent noted that the last of the three conditions mentioned above is the most critical. Some people who meet the first two conditions have their accounts deleted: the accounts of well-known far-right figures Alex Jones and Milo Yiannopoulos have been verified, and both have more than 100,000 followers.
The Independent noted that according to this standard, once Trump resigns, it appears that he will no longer be protected, allowing him to be exempted from Twitter’s punishment.
Twitter did not confirm whether Trump’s recent violations of the platform’s guidelines for platform use could lead to account suspension, but noted that he frequently violated the company’s Civic Integrity Policy.
