Both the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro were officially opened for pre-orders last week. Regardless of whether you have successfully placed an order, you should be very interested in these two iPhones with 5G connectivity. Before shipping, we will start with the Chinese version of Engadget to unpack the new product. Let’s see with you what you need to know and prepare if you want to get a new iPhone.
The packing boxes of the two iPhones are very flat, the reason not surprising because this time Apple canceled the charger and the included headphones, so it is not necessary to make the boxes that large. In addition to the official element of environmental protection, it also helps reduce costs, because it saves costs of packaging materials and accessories. In the same shipping box volume, you can put more iPhones as close together as possible, which is super loud.
The first to open is the iPhone 12 Pro with a black outer case. After opening the lid of the box, what you see is the back of the new Pacific Blue Meimei machine. The matte dark blue color scheme is truly beautiful, with a low-key and noble temperament. The camera part is as shown in the press conference, that is, in the previous generation of the three-camera Pro camera combination, a LiDAR sensor is added, so now there are five openings in this square module, along with the LED lights. It is now full.
When you pick up the phone, the bright blue stainless steel center frame glows. Unsurprisingly, hand oil and fingerprints are easy to leave marks on them. Friends who are hygienic should pay attention to it. The flat, flat mid-frame design is very similar to the iPhone 4s and the lunch meat cans. However, the design of the physical buttons has been changed and modern long volume buttons are used instead of circular ones.
Going back to the front, this time the iPhone screen is only protected by a sticky pink paper, not the previous generation clear plastic sheet. I mean, the publisher has seen that some people don’t break the plastic sheet and use it directly as a screen protector … But this time it doesn’t work, so I have to believe that Apple’s new ceramic glass protector really does. The claim is strong.
The size of the iPhone 12 Pro has been updated to 6.1 inches. After all, the weight is similar to the previous generation, so there is not a huge difference in feel. But it may be due to the change in the mid-frame at a right angle, so the width of the body is similar to that of the iPhone 11 Pro, and the height is only slightly higher. However, for the rounder iPhone 11 Pro, the iPhone 12 Pro has such a flat and square body design. When holding bare metal in your hand, it’s more like holding a hard piece of iron, but it’s not uncomfortable. There is a subtle feeling.
This is the case of the mobile phone and then the contents of the box. Fortunately, there is still a transmission cable in the iPhone case. The new generation of iPhones naturally keep up with the USB-C Lightning cable, and then there are Apple stickers, safety manuals, and stickers, which are just a few things.
The screen changed to the iPhone 12, and inside the white outer box was a mint green machine, and the light milk green was very attractive. The fuselage is the same as the previous generation with a glossy surface, which can be compared to the Pro machine. Fortunately, the fingerprint is not obvious, so please clean it when you want. The middle frame is made of matte aluminum alloy, which matches the color of the fuselage, and the official said it is made from recycled waste. The grip is the same as the iPhone 12 Pro, but the weight is significantly lighter and the figure is 20g worse than the previous generation, only 162g.
The camera module is the same as the old simple dual camera module. However, if you look closely, you will find that the module’s outstanding range is as great as the iPhone 12 Pro. Why? Because the measurements of the iPhone 12 and the iPhone 12 Pro are the same this time, in addition to the buttons on the body, the position of the camera module and the size are the same, so accessories such as mobile phone cases they are universal.
Of course, the internals of the two iPhones are different. The Hong Kong version of the iPhone 12 Pro will have dual nano-SIM + e-SIM support; iPhone 12 only has dual nano-SIMs. Although I want to save the 5G part for the next article, I will share it with you now because it is super important.
If you insert two SIM cards in iPhone 12 Pro and 12, it can only receive 4G network at most! Apple officially confirmed this and said it will release an update later to replenish the 5G function of the dual card. So if you get a new iPhone and want to enjoy 5G, you can just insert a SIM card to use it before the relevant update.
Now that the accessories are mentioned above, let’s get into the MagSafe accessories part. Apple has added a new MagSafe accessory specification to the iPhone 12 series. This familiar name, the new meaning is the magnetic accessory used for the iPhone, and it is also a new synonym for Apple’s high-power green (comparative) wireless charging.
MagSafe is a specification compatible with Qi wireless charging, so the wireless charging performed by this is the same principle, but Apple has added a magnetically stable system, so it can safely increase the maximum power to 15W. Although it is still a small cafe in the industry, it is finally twice the 7.5W of the past.
There will be a visible circle on the MagSafe accessories to match the iPhone’s wireless charging coil. At the same time, it also contains the NFC tag and the magnetometer. This is naturally to ensure the certification of MFi accessories (yes, it is also for concept money). And when MagSafe accessories are installed, the system will display a circular animation for users to confirm that they are installed.
The MagSafe accessories that were borrowed this time include a silicone phone case and a transparent phone case and of course the MagSafe charger is a must have. The touch of the first two is very similar to that of assets. The difference is that there are more MagSafe circles, and the transparent one, which is getting bigger, shows a pattern similar to the word Qi. It is different if it looks good or not.
Of course, everyone is most concerned about the MagSafe charger. This seemingly gigantic magnetic Apple Watch charger is in fact the same in use: it can be automatically placed on the back of the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 in the corresponding position by magnetism. In terms of magnetic force, MagSafe can be properly held on the back of the iPhone, and indeed it can solve the shortcomings of wireless chargers that sometimes fail to charge due to wrong locations. But the magnetic force is not so strong that it is completely sticky and the user can be separated with a little force. So if you have the illusion of using this MagSafe charger as a car charger, I advise you to discard it, because a hit to the car will have a chance to send the phone flying. Not surprisingly, the other end of the MagSafe charger cable is USB-C, the cable is about 1 meter long, so everyone has to think about how to place it.
Then there’s one more note at the end, and everyone who’s smart may have noticed. Yes, remember to prepare a USB-C charger first. In the past, all the chargers that came with the iPhone were USB-A specifications, but the iPhone 11 Pro series, iPad Pro, and the latest iPad Air are USB-C chargers. The aforementioned MagSafe charger actually only has a magnetic board, and the USB-C charger doesn’t include it.
So before you bring your new phone home, make sure the charger you’re using has USB-C, or you can buy one from the Apple Store. Now it is 20W directly. It’s not impossible to keep the old ones, but the load will be slower …
Okay, let’s stop here for the out of the box presentation of the iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Pro, and MagSafe.
