We all know that Musk is the CEO of Tesla, but few people can know that Tesla was not founded by Musk, but by Martin Eberhard (Martin Eberhard). Musk joined Tesla in a later investment and became the president of Tesla.
Recently, some netizens on Twitter claimed that Musk had “stolen” Tesla from Martin Eberhard, and Musk jumped in to refute it.
Tesla’s real father, Martin Eberhard, was very interested in electric cars in the early days, but the fatal problem with electric cars at the time was that the range was too short, so he thought of lithium batteries, which were originally used as laptops. Lithium batteries are used in the field of electric vehicles, and after trying, it is found that a battery array composed of 18650 cells can not only provide high-quality power, but also the mileage of the electric vehicle has reached the 480 kilometers after further improvements.
In 2003, Martin Eberhard founded Tesla Motors in partnership with friends and served as CEO. Musk joined Tesla through investments in 2004 and became president of Tesla. In 2007, Martin Eberhard left Tesla. At this point, Musk has officially become the true leader of Tesla.
Therefore, the outside world has always had the impression that Musk is driving away “Tesla’s father.”
However, Musk recently refuted this rumor. He said if he stole Tesla, when Eberhard left, many employees should follow him, but this is not the case.
Twitter user @enn_nafnlaus recently posted that “Musk stole Tesla from Eberhard.”
Musk responded: “In mid-2007, when Eberhard was removed from the position of CEO of Tesla because he provided false information to me and the board of directors, no one followed him. I think this has already been proven. Everything is fine.”
Musk also claimed that the Wikipedia part about Eberhard has “embellished” his role.
Tesla’s explanation on Wikipedia is: “Tesla was founded by engineers Martin Eberhard and Marc Tarpenning in 2003. Elon Musk, Ian Wright and JBStraubel were the next three employees to join. Later, according to the 2009 report in the dispute resolution agreement, the last three were allowed to be listed as co-founders. “
An article in 2009 also mentioned Eberhard’s accusation that Musk tried to rewrite Tesla’s history after he ousted him as CEO in 2007. A settlement reportedly emerged after the lawsuit acknowledging that Tesla had five founders.
In a podcast discussing the early history of Tesla in February of this year, Musk once called Eberhard “the worst person I’ve ever worked with.” Musk is also critical of Wikipedia, saying in August: “History is written by the victors, except Wikipedia.”
