Syracuse coach Jim Boheim announces he has tested positive for coronavirus

SYRACUS, NY – Syracuse basketball coach Jim Boheim has tested positive for coronavirus.

Boehme released a statement on Twitter on Sunday evening stating that he had tested positive for the virus during the Syracuse basketball team’s recent test round. The team’s coaches and players are currently being tested several times a week.

Boheim said in a statement that he is currently separated from home.

“I am not experiencing any symptoms at this time, and will be closely monitoring my health as advised by the medical staff,” he said in a statement.

Bohem will turn 76 on Tuesday. He will enter his 45th season as head coach of his Alma Mater.

In a text message, Boheh said, “Looks great!”

Shortly after Boheh released his statement on Twitter, Syracuse Athletic Director John Wildhack announced that another member of the SU Basketball .l program had also tested positive.

“Following our Covid safety protocol, following a positive test of the coach, we conducted an additional round of testing for all members of the Basketball program,” Wildhack said. “From that test we learned that another member of the program tested positive.”

Wildhack said the basketball team will suspend all activities.

“We are complying with all CDC guidelines and the ACC protocol, and are working with the Onandaga County Department of Health to reduce further transmission of the virus,” Wildhack said. In a week. ”

These are the first known positive tests within the Syracuse basketball program since the team’s players returned to campus in July.

Syracuse season is set to open on Friday, November 27, with a home game against Bryant. Based on when Boehm last tested negative, he may still be in quarantine, forcing him to miss the Orange season-opener.

This past Thursday, Boheim spoke to reporters via a zoom call about the steps being taken to protect Cirquez coaches and players.

Over the past few weeks SU players, coaches and managers have been wearing devices like wristwatches that measure players ’proximity to each other and staff. Those devices emit a color-coded beeping sound that alerts the wearer that he or she is close to someone else and warns when the wearer gets too close (possibly within six feet).

The concept behind the wearable is how much contact players, coaches and staff interact with each other during practice and to establish a contact tracing record that could potentially avoid each player, coach or staff member due to a positive test.

“What we’re trying to do is keep them at a distance in practice and with me for example, I’m only in front of one player for two minutes,” Boheen said. “So, if something happened and I tested positive, I’m not close to the players’ entire practice.”

That move could be enough to keep Syracuse from postponing the game against Bryant.
