Warm, cold, sunny, humid. The weather goes back and forth for the next few days.

A sudden change in weather is taking place in most of Sweden with storm surge, heavy snow and a sudden ice slide.

There is a risk that road conditions will be very difficult in various places, according to Mikael Sjöstrand, a meteorologist from Klart.

The week started gray, with rain and wind in much of the country. At the same time, temperatures are unusually mild for November with three to seven degrees above normal.

It is still mild even on Wednesday, but during the afternoon or evening towards Thursday, a new low pressure is entering that gives an adequate change of climate throughout the country. During Thursday night, it is expected to snow quite a bit in some parts of Jämtland, Dalarna, Gävleborg and Västernorrland and later in the day also Västerbotten and Norrbotten. Southern Norrland and Dalarna can expect up to 10-20 cm of snow, further south the snow cover will be thinner, around 1 to 5 cm.

During the day, it decreases slightly, but the snow climate moves further east, towards the coasts and the south of the country.

– The dangerous thing is that since Wednesday is so mild, it freezes quite quickly when it starts to snow, so there is a risk of both ice and ice falling under the snow on Thursday morning, says Mikael Sjöstrand, meteorologist by Klart.

Risk of snow and ice slides on Thursday.

First snow and in many places ice

In the south it will be a very mild start to the day in the south with 10-12 degrees early Thursday morning in Stockholm, Gothenburg and Malmö. Later in the afternoon there will be a streak of rain, behind which snow is expected to fall around Västmanland, Värmland, Närke and Uppland and Södermanland.

Here there is also the risk of snow and ice slides late on Thursday.

– It is a maximum of a few inches of snow on Thursday night. But if you don’t have your winter tires on, maybe you shouldn’t hit the road. Since it’s the first snow, probably more people will be a bit surprised, says Mikael Sjöstrand.

In Götaland it will rain more.

Local storm

It is more uncertain how much snow will fall further south, there may be snow in Östergötland, but in Götaland it will be most of the rain. On the other hand, it will be very windy in the counties of Västergötland, Örebro and Halland.

– Low pressure makes for a lot of wind along the west coast, with storm surges Thursday morning along the coast. Locally, there will be really strong wind gusts even over land, says Mikael Sjöstrand.

There will be winds of 20-25 m / s in these areas and in the afternoon winds of up to 19-23 m / s are also expected in Skåne, Småland and Östergötland.

– It is quite possible that the weather is difficult even in the south. Wind can cause disruptions to power grids and traffic, as well as blow away individual branches and trees.

Even on Friday morning there is a risk of slipping as Friday night will be cold.

– Negative grades mean that wet roads freeze and there may be icy road surfaces in these areas during Friday morning, says Mikael Sjöstrand.

A beautiful winter day is expected

Despite a difficult Thursday, Friday is expected to offer a pleasant winter day, with sun and low temperatures in many places.

– Behind the chaos of the snow, it will be a beautiful winter day, with negative degrees in many places, even in the south.

This weekend, more normal temperatures are expected in November with 5-10 degrees in Götaland and 2-7 degrees in Svealand. It will be zero degrees along the north coast and 5-6 degrees below zero inland. On Saturday, there will be rain and rain mixed with snow in Svealand, but it will snow even more in the north, especially in the mountainous areas.

The fast covers are due to the deep low pressures, says Mikael Sjöstrand.

– Behind them, cold air enters. That is why we are achieving such a rapid change.
