– For a long time we have seen that photographs of children and young people, which may have been taken voluntarily from the beginning, are disseminated online. As soon as they spread without the consent of the child and beyond the control of the child, it is a problem that can make the child feel bad, says Isabella Kim, a lawyer for the children’s rights organization Ecpat, which has started a service to help children with pictures.
To the Ecpat hotline, where the public can anonymously report suspected child sex trafficking, sexual abuse and sexual exploitation of children, pictures of naked children and young people are posted online every day.
– The need to eliminate offensive nudes is enormous. You can do a lot yourself and therefore we have put together a platform guide that shows what the child can do on their own to get rid of the images by contacting platforms and managing privacy settings, says Isabella Kim.
No guarantees
But Ecpat can also help. When the organization is tasked with downloading a nude photo or movie from the Internet, it begins by examining where it was spread, which the child sometimes knows.
– Then we can contact the platforms where it is disseminated. But you can’t say that it is removed forever, it really doesn’t work. It may be that there are people who have had time to download it and then publish it on another platform.
But then Ecpat has a Canadian tool, Arachnid, which can find the image / movie if it appears on other platforms.
– When the tool has searched for the image, a new request is sent to remove the illegal image. He’s looking for the darknet too, says Isabella Kim.
She describes the tool as effective, but points out that Ecpat can never guarantee that the downloaded image or movie will be off the web forever.
– I wish there was such a solution. Not so, but we can make it more difficult and prevent the spread, he says.
Peter Eriksson, Crime Inspector for the Stockholm Child Pornography Group, shares his opinion.
– It is good that they are trying to help children and young people to take pictures of the network. But they can never guarantee that the images will never appear again. Even if an image is removed, it only needs to be changed a bit so it can continue to spread, he says.
Adult perpetrators
In her work investigating crimes in which children have been sexually exploited, she sees the disadvantages of children and young people taking and submitting nude photos of themselves. Although the photos were originally taken voluntarily and sent to a close colleague or friend, the police repeatedly see examples of adults using photos that have been released online for extortion purposes.
– Everyone should know that it is bad to send nude photos to someone you have not been with for so long. But young people do not always think about the consequences, if you are between 15 and 16 years old, you cannot get an overview of what can happen if a picture is spread online, says Peter Eriksson.
He said that it is not uncommon for adults to contact young people for a sexual purpose when they come across a nude photo, which has been posted online, and use the photo as a means of pressure to persuade the girl or boy to send more photos or perform sexual acts in front of the camera. .
In a survey, to which 6,500 people responded, Ecpat discovered the attitude of children and young people when sharing nude photos and videos online. Most of the children who responded think that it can be positive to share a nude photo or “swap photos” with another young person, as long as both are involved.
Let adults send nude photos to children, no one thinks it’s okay. However, many children have experienced just that.
