A young man has been arrested, suspected of having stabbed a man completely unknown to him at a bus stop in Uppsala overnight until Wednesday. Police are now investigating connections to a similar case in Sala from last week.
At 01:00 pm, a man in his 20s, apparently without any provocation, was assaulted and was stabbed twice in the back by an unknown perpetrator. The assault took place in connection with both men getting off the Sala bus at Ekonomikum in Uppsala.
– This author is completely unknown to the plaintiffs, has not been caused, to our knowledge, by any exchange of views. You will simply get off the bus and be attacked and stabbed, says police spokesman Jonas Eronen.
He was taken to hospital with injuries that turned out to be so minor that he could be questioned by the police.
– Being stabbed with a knife in this manner is associated with life threatening. That he’s not mortally wounded is a coincidence, says Jonas Eronen.
Similar crimes in court
After intense work, the police were able to arrest and then arrest a young man suspected of being behind the assault on Wednesday afternoon. The man is currently a suspect in attempted murder after the incident in Uppsala, but police are also investigating another attempted murder.
The man who was stabbed had boarded the bus in Morgongåva, between Sala and Uppsala. But the police suspect that the attacker was on the same bus already in Sala. There, a man in his 45s was similarly attacked last week by an unknown perpetrator armed with a knife.
– There are similarities in these two crimes, they are relatively close in time, and another common denominator is Salabussen. So see if he could have done that in Sala too, says Jonas Eronen.
Police are looking for passengers
Over the past 24 hours, the police have carried out a technical investigation of the bus and the area around the stop, and have secured some outdoor finds that should be sent for analysis. Police still want to keep what the findings are a secret.
At the same time, the police want to contact the 10-15 passengers who took the same bus as the two men involved, the 848 bus that left Sala at 11:50 p.m. on Tuesday night and arrived in Uppsala just over one hour later.
– You may have sat there and think that “what I have seen is not important”, but it can be a crucial piece when you put the puzzle in the investigation, says Jonas Eronen.
